Occasionally we have a year when everything goes right in the vineyard, and 2008 was one such year. The spring of 2008 was kind with no frosts on the young shoots and with good rainfall through to December. From flowering time through to the last half of December the weather was much warmer than the previous year, resulting in a good even fruit set.
There was vigorous growth through January, which meant a lot of lateral shoot removal The nets went on mid February. From then until harvest in May there was virtually no rain. The fruit was harvested by hand and was in perfect condition. Both the Pinot Gris and the Pinot Noir were picked at 25 Brix which is the highest level of brix that we have recorded.
A feature of the 2008 wines is the purity of the flavours they exhibit. The Muller Thurgau and Pinot Gris were bottled quite dry and are of exceptional quality.
Unfortunately December 2006 was just too cold for the vines to pollinate and as a result there was no fruit set and no 2007 vintage. A warm December this year is very much needed. We have sufficient stocks of wine to carry us through another year including the 2006 Pinot Noir which has been awarded Bronze Medal Bragatto 2007 Wine Awards and four stars Winestate Pinot Noir Tasting. This wine will be released in 2008/2009.
